JSpaceCanada is heartbroken by the devastating terrorist attack at the American Jewish Committee’s Young Diplomats reception on the evening of May 21 in Washington, D.C., which claimed the lives of Yaron Lischinsky and Sarah Milgrim. We extend our deepest condolences to their families and loved ones, and stand in solidarity with all those grieving this senseless loss.
The targeting of a Jewish gathering under the false banner of solidarity with Palestinians must be widely condemned, and we thank Jewish, Israeli, Palestinian, and other allies who have risen above this hate to offer such condemnation.
Let us be unequivocal: there is no justification - ever - for terrorism. Support for Palestinian rights and the pursuit of peace must never be twisted into a license to harm Jews or any civilians. Acts like this only deepen division and bring suffering to both Israelis and Palestinians.
We also reject the attempt to draw a straight line from this atrocity to any domestic political stance. Assigning blame to politicians or activists based on their views about the Israeli government or the war in Gaza is not only misleading, it detracts from confronting the true nature of this hate-driven violence.
The escalation of inflammatory rhetoric, whether in protests or politics, that dehumanizes others or glorifies violence must stop. Speaking out against such language is not only a stand against rising hate in Canada, but a defense of our democracy and the fundamental values that underpin it.
We reaffirm our commitment to a future grounded in peace, dignity, and safety for both Israelis and Palestinians. That future cannot be built on the suffering of innocents, nor can it emerge from hatred. In a world that too often pushes us toward division and fear, choosing to rise above hate and continue striving for peace, democracy, and freedom is a profound act of courage and defiance.
We stand in solidarity with our American and Israeli friends and colleagues, and may the memories of Yaron Lischinsky and Sarah Milgrim be a blessing.
