The confirmation today of the killing of Hamas leader Yaya Sinwar by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) is no doubt a tactical victory for Israel. Sinwar orchestrated the horrific Hamas terror attacks on October 7 in which more than 1,200 Israelis and foreign nationals were killed, including seven Canadians, and 250 taken hostage.

“No one should shed a tear over the killing of a ruthless terrorist who has brought incalculable terror, pain, and suffering to both the Israeli and Palestinian people not only in the past year but for years prior to the October 7 attacks,” stated JSpaceCanada Executive Director Maytal Kowalski.

“These short-term tactical victories must, however, lead to a long-term strategy including the end of the war, the return of the remaining 101 hostages, a day-after plan that includes a new administration in Gaza to manage the strip, and a resumption of two-state negotiations and a diplomatic solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.”

This must be a moment that Canada, Israel, and other international allies leverage for a ceasefire and hostage release deal and a day-after plan with a vision of peace for the future.
