JSpaceCanada is horrified to learn that a Canadian activist was violently attacked by Jewish settlers in the occupied West Bank while volunteering to protect Palestinian communities.
We have repeatedly raised concerns with both the Canadian public and the federal government about the escalating campaign of violence carried out by extremist Jewish settlers against Palestinians in the occupied West Bank. This violence continues to intensify, creating an increasingly dangerous and unstable situation on the ground.
Most recently, we launched a petition urging supporters to contact their Members of Parliament and call for stronger action to curb settler violence. Specifically, we have called on the Canadian government to ban imports from Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank, consistent with the July 2024 International Court of Justice advisory opinion, and to maintain and expand sanctions on:
• entities that build or support illegal violent outposts and herding farms;
• individuals who enable or participate in settler violence;
• Israeli private contractors who carry out demolitions in Area C; and
• senior officials involved in settlement administration.
We continue to urge the government of Canada to remain focused on this issue. The impunity enjoyed by violent settlers, and the political support some receive within the Israeli government, poses a direct threat to any future peace and to the viability of a two-state solution, a cornerstone of Canada’s long-standing foreign policy.
With Canada’s recognition of a State of Palestine, it is now incumbent upon the government to oppose actions that undermine not only Palestine’s future sovereignty but its very ability to exist.
We stand with activists in Canada, Israel, and around the world who take great risks to protect those most vulnerable. We wish a full and speedy recovery to those injured, and we call on the Canadian government to continue speaking out forcefully against settler violence and to reaffirm that Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank are illegal under international law.
