JSpaceCanada is heartbroken by the devastating terrorist attack at the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation Synagogue in Manchester, England, which claimed two lives and left three others in hospital with serious injuries. We extend our deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of the victims, and stand in solidarity with all those grieving this senseless loss.

That this attack took place on Yom Kippur, the holiest day on the Jewish calendar, amid rising antisemitism and heightened fear only deepens the devastation and pain. Kol Yisrael Arevim Ze b’Ze (all Jews are responsible for one another) feels especially poignant today, as we mourn alongside our British Jewish siblings and Jewish communities around the world.

The global rise in antisemitism is a stark reminder that hate thrives when democratic norms erode and trusted institutions weaken. Leaders must speak out forcefully against these erosions, and we must all stand together. Not to universalize antisemitism or diminish today’s tragedy, but because no form of hate can ever be eradicated without addressing its root causes.

We also reject the attempt to draw a straight line from this atrocity to any domestic political stance. Assigning blame to politicians or activists based on their views about the Israeli government or the war in Gaza is not only misleading, it detracts from confronting the true nature of this hate-driven violence.

We reaffirm our commitment to peace, dignity, and safety for all people. These cannot emerge from hatred or the suffering of innocents. In a world too often driven by fear and division, choosing to rise above hate and continue striving for peace, democracy, and freedom is a profound act of courage.

Yom Kippur is a time to reflect not only on our choices of the past, but the choices we will make in the future. As this day of observance comes to a close, we join our global Jewish community in committing to building a future of safety, justice, and peace.
