As we prepare to light the first candle tonight for Channukah, JSpaceCanada is heartbroken and alarmed by the horrific antisemitic terrorist attack at a Channukah celebration on Sydney, Australia’s Bondi Beach. Our hearts are with the families and friends of the victims, with 11 people reported dead and another 29 hospitalized at the time of this writing.

Targeting a joyous religious celebration is not only an attack on Jews; it is an attack on the core principles of democracy, public safety, and freedom of religious expression. This tragedy is a stark reminder that antisemitism is a global threat, and that extremism and hate-fuelled violence put all communities at risk.

We also commend the heroic actions of bystander Ahmed al-Ahmed, who courageously tackled one of the shooters and wrestled the gun away, turning it back on the attacker. Al-Ahmed was subsequently shot in the knee and is currently in hospital.

While al-Ahmed embodies so much of what Chanukah represents—being a small light that creates hope amidst darkness—we must also recognize that the scourge of antisemitism cannot be fought by any one individual. It requires the collective efforts of citizens, governments, and communal leaders alike.

This attack also underscores that antisemitic violence never begins or ends with Jews. It is a deeply troubling warning sign of the erosion of democratic values, declining trust in institutions, and the spread of conspiracy theories and mis- and disinformation.

It is incumbent upon all of us to demand and support strong leadership and institutions that confront and combat rising hate with seriousness and resolve.
