The Israeli government's decision to escalate military operations to seize control of Gaza City, without a clear exit strategy or a plan for alternative governance, is both reckless and deeply perilous.

This move is opposed not only by the majority of the Israeli public but also by senior figures within the country’s security establishment.

It puts IDF soldiers, Israeli hostages still held in Gaza, and Palestinian civilians at even greater risk.

JSpaceCanada echoes the deep concern, opposition, and resistance expressed by Israeli military leaders, hostage families, and a growing majority of Israeli citizens.

Far from weakening Hamas, a continued military campaign without a viable political strategy will only strengthen the group, which thrives on human suffering and international condemnation of Israel.

Meanwhile, far-right ministers, whose support is essential to the current coalition, are calling for even more extreme measures, including the forced displacement of Palestinians and the re-establishment of Israeli settlements in Gaza.

Canada, having recently committed to recognizing a Palestinian state, must now demonstrate that its words will be matched by action. The government must exert meaningful pressure, not only to halt this dangerous course but to help preserve the possibility of a future independent and sovereign Palestinian state.

“Just last week, 600 former Israeli officials urged U.S. President Donald Trump to pressure Prime Minister Netanyahu into reaching a deal. Nearly every living former head of Israel’s major security agencies has gone on record fiercely opposing Netanyahu’s handling of this war and calling for a ceasefire-for-hostages agreement,” said Maytal Kowalski, Executive Director of JSpaceCanada.
