JSpaceCanada is horrified and devastated by the deadly terror attack in Jerusalem earlier today, which claimed six lives and left many more wounded.
Our hearts are with the families of the victims, and we wish a full and speedy recovery to those injured. We are grateful the attackers were stopped before even more lives were lost. Hamas’ statement “welcoming” this atrocity is grotesque and underscores why the group must never again be allowed to hold power in Gaza.
At a time of heightened tensions and unrest, this attack threatens to fuel even greater chaos and bloodshed across Israel and the occupied West Bank. Retaliatory violence or indiscriminate crackdowns against innocent people will only deepen the cycle of suffering for both Israelis and Palestinians.
It is imperative that Israel and the Palestinian Authority work together to hold those responsible accountable and to prevent further escalation. Canada must play its part by bolstering the Palestinian Authority as a viable alternative to Hamas, in line with its commitment to recognize Palestinian statehood later this month.
We also reiterate the urgent need for a deal to bring the hostages home, end the war in Gaza, and pursue lasting diplomatic and political solutions.
The only way forward is to end this conflict for the sake of delivering true security, dignity, and freedom for all, and to ensure that future generations are spared from these horrors.
