The results of Israel’s election represent a significant rebuke to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his far-right coalition. A clear majority of Israeli voters have sent a powerful message rejecting the extremism, corruption, erosion of democratic institutions, and policies that have characterized this government and threatened Israel’s future as a secure, democratic homeland for the Jewish people.

The extraordinarily high voter turnout is a testament to the resilience of Israeli democracy and the determination of its citizens to shape their country's future. Particularly encouraging was the historic participation of Arab citizens of Israel, who turned out in record numbers and secured unprecedented representation in the Knesset. Their participation is not only a victory for democratic engagement, but a powerful reminder that Israel's future must be shaped by all its citizens, Jewish and Arab alike.

While the final results and composition of Israel’s next government remain uncertain, one thing should be clear: This is a moment for Israel’s Jewish opposition parties to demonstrate genuine leadership by embracing Jewish-Arab political partnership and working together to form an alternative government. In any functioning liberal democracy, an election in which a clear majority of voters reject the sitting government should provide an opportunity for meaningful political change. Israel should be no exception.

Israel cannot claim to be a thriving, inclusive democracy while treating the political representatives of one-fifth of its population as illegitimate governing partners. Arab citizens of Israel are equal citizens, and their elected representatives must be recognized as legitimate participants in determining the country's future, including as partners in a governing coalition. Jewish-Arab political cooperation is not simply a matter of parliamentary arithmetic or political expediency, it is a fundamental test of Israel’s commitment to democracy, equality, and pluralism, and an essential step toward building a shared future.

JSpaceCanada’s Executive Director Maytal Kowalski said: “at JSpaceCanada, we believe that Israel's future as a Jewish and democratic state is inseparable from its commitment to equality, human rights, and the pursuit of a just and lasting peace with the Palestinian people. A government committed to democratic renewal must not only protect the rights and political participation of all Israeli citizens, but also recognize that Israel's long-term security, democratic character, and international standing depend on ending the occupation and advancing a negotiated two-state solution that guarantees self-determination, security, and dignity for both Israelis and Palestinians.

For Canadian Jews and our communal institutions, this is a moment to speak clearly and unequivocally. Supporting Israel and its democracy means supporting the full and equal participation of Arab citizens and their elected representatives, even when doing so challenges longstanding political assumptions and communal conventions. We call on Canadian Jewish leaders and organizations to affirm publicly that Jewish-Arab political partnership is not a threat to Israel's Jewish identity, but an essential expression of its democratic values.”

Canada, too, has an important role to play. As a friend and ally of Israel, Canada must continue to champion Israeli democracy, equality, and the rule of law, while encouraging political leadership that advances peace, rejects extremism, and protects the rights of all those living between the Jordan River and the Mediterranean Sea.

At this pivotal moment, we must be clear about the Israel we support and the future we seek: an Israel that is secure within internationally recognized borders, democratic in both its institutions and its values, equal for all its citizens, and committed to peace and Palestinian self-determination.

The Israeli electorate has created an opportunity for change. It is now incumbent upon Israel's political leaders, and those of us in the diaspora who care deeply about Israel's future, to ensure that this opportunity is not squandered.
